Sun of 81 is the collaborative effort of California’s Gilbert Avila and Arizona’s Stacy Stephens. A long ride through vast desert lands and red rocky hills in such a dry heat the body’s sweat vaporizes immediately. A broken air condi- tioner full blast blowing hot air countering the heat pouring in the open windows as the afternoons sun reaches its peak. Blistering, sweltering, a thousand verbs to describe one deafening sensation. Limited fluid supply leaves the mind to wander in hysterical desolation. Attempting to cope with such conditions has led to haunting echoes and distant visions that are all but lucid. The road seems to be floating in a dreary haze yet the persistent hums of the engine let you know you are not asleep. 30 minutes with no turning back; you’ve made your commitment.
